The author of the blog post stated that they can get found on the first page of Google for misspelled keywords and although there are some benefits to this here is my problem:

If you are operating a business website and are found ranked highly for a typo, ‘how professional does your business look to your prospects?’

I would argue that you will not look very professional at all! Let’s say you are targeting the highly competitive loans industry and you rank well for the typo credt in place of credit.

Now if you are a company that specialises in bad credit loans etc how likely do you think it is that a prospect will want to risk taking out a loan from you.

Another reason why this can be a waste of time is Google are really helpful and they will give you the following option:

Most people will more than likely click on the correct spelling. It’s a decision that you will have to make whether you target misspellings in you business website but I urge you to use it sparingly.

Although the search engines give less and less relevance to meta keywords, this would be the only place I would put any typos I wanted to target. Lastly, there is a place for keyword misspellling I don’t believe organic search is the best place!

This post assumes that you understand what keywords are and why they are important for search engine optimisation purposes. Mortgage – core keyword (high competition and difficult for a new website to rank well for)

Returning to the main point of this post, Wordtracker have a very cool free keyword suggestion tool that is ideal for finding keywords and keyword phrases that you can then target. Wordtracker will also tell you how many daily searches are performed for each keyword so you can get an insight into how popular a keyword / phrase is.

Visit Wordtracker and type your keyword / phrase into the given box and you will then be presented with a results page. Below you will see the results you get for typing in the keyword ‘mortgage‘.

You can see from looking at the image above that the daily searches is represented by a number on the left and the suggested keywords are displayed next to each number. Now, to dig even deeper you can click on one of the keyword / phrases, and for this post I clicked on ‘refinance mortgage‘.

Now keep digging deeper and deeper and you will find keyword phrases that will be highly focused search terms with low competition.

A decent looking website can help convert people into customers but these ‘people’ have to be able to find your website in the first place. If you aren’t being found you will NOT make any money - period!

It can be seriously frustrating to put out a great website and, a few months on, still have only a trickle of visitors. It can be even more frustrating to see your pages found on page ten of the search engine for your targeted keywords.

So what can you do about this?

1. Create lots of fresh content and add it to your website so people can find it, share it and link to it! The more pages you have indexed within the search engines the more in-roads you have pointing to your sales page.

Type a search query into Google, in this example I’m using ‘search engine marketing’. You’ll notice that Google returned the following results. Now when you take a closer look at the top of the page you’ll notice a tab that says ‘Show Options‘.

On the next screen, on the left sidebar, you’ll notice a link that says ‘Wonder Wheel‘, click on this!

Below you will see the Wonder Wheel in action and what happens when you click on one of the related links.

Why is this so exciting?

You will be able to keep clicking deeper and deeper to find some excellent keywords (and search terms) that you may not have considered. You’ll also be able to see exactly how these terms are related to one another.
